Lighting Up Lives

Eating the Sun Story

My Journey with "Eating the Sun"

I’d like to share a story about my recent journey with the "Eating the Sun" community. During this journey, I had the pleasure of meeting two remarkable individuals: Vivek Shenoy, VP of Tejus Networks, and Mr. Arif Shouqi, a senior engineer at Google India.

A couple of years ago during B.Tech, I visited a reserve forest and saw how some households relied on dynamos for electricity. I shared this on LinkedIn, and a friend connected me with Mr. Shenoy, who assured me that their community project could help.

"Eating the Sun" was founded a decade ago by engineers to bring free solar power to homes without electricity. They’ve completed 100+ projects and continue their mission across India.

Joining the Mission: I decided to contribute and had one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

Solar Installation

In May 2024, we started installing solar kits in Balmavathi village. Our first visit was to Baby Amma’s house, a lone clay-walled hut deep in the forest. Transporting equipment was tough, but the serene forest made it worthwhile.

A Moment of Joy

We switched on the light in Baby Amma’s house. Her joy was unforgettable. Hareesh, the village assistant, supported us throughout the project with food, shelter, and guidance.

A Team Effort

I installed switches, lights, and wiring. Mr. Vivek and Mr. Arif welcomed my questions and encouraged me to take the initiative forward within my organization.
